The Islamic renaissance was instrumental in Tatarstan's struggle for autonomy within the Russian Federation. However, as soon as the republic's significant independence from Moscow had been secured, the schism among Tatarstani Muslims followed. Political power and access to the assets sent by foreign sponsors of the Islamic revival are factors that influence the religious life of some 2 million Muslims in Tatarstan.
