During his IPF fellowship, Gusztav Nemes conducted extensive research and published widely on the politics of rural development prior to and following European Union accession. He advises the European Parliament on issues of rural development in Hungary.
Affiliation: Research Fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences; Hungarian representative for a European Commission task force on rural development and agricultural policies.

2004 - 2005: Rural development policies and knowledge transfer
The objectives of the project are to conduct comparative analysis of EU and domestic policies aimed at local development and self-organization in backward rural areas in Spain and Hungary; suggest the ways of adapting the Spanish experience under Central and Eastern European circumstances; and write research and policy papers for the Hungarian Rural Parliament, Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and European Agricultural Convention.

2002 - 2003: Rural development policies in Central and Eastern Europe
The objectives of the project are to explore the evolution of rural policies and institution-building in CEE with special regard to Hungary and contribute to the development of an integrated, sustainable approach to this process; write a research paper and develop policy recommendations for officials, civil organizations and academics including the Rural Development Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture and Regional Development, regional development councils and agencies, international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) including World Wildlife Fund-International, nationwide NGOs including the Hungarian Rural Parliament and Ökoszolgálat, and selected local development groups.
